Who is it for?

Monte Rosa Skitour Camp as an advanced ski tour is suitable for people who:

  • are in a very good physical condition – on average we cover from 1000 to 1600 meters of elevation gain with heavy backpacks each day,
  • have very good off-piste skiing experience, who can smoothly and dynamically descend in any terrain (including forest with a slope of 35 degrees) and in any snow,
  • completed avalanche course,
  • have perfect technical skills related to ski mountaineering – making turns, handling long technical descends, handling the avalanche kit and operating with the snow axe and in crampons.

Checking each participant:

We are going to check each participant at the beginning of the winter season. The most important thing for us is to check the level of fitness and downhill skiing. In case of minor deficiencies we will plan how to make up for them, in case of major deficiencies we are forced to cancel registrations and return 100% of the deposit paid.

IMPORTANT: If avalanche/weather conditions do not allow you to walk the entire Monte Rosa route, accommodation will be booked in the city from where the guides will take you to the best tours of the area, in such a scenario, the cost of accommodation is on our side while food (selected a’la carte) and ski lifts are on the side of the clients.

Price

Extra costs:

  • 70 euros – rental of the avalanche kit for the duration of the tour.

Registration

Payment is divided into two installments:

  • first installment – payment within 7 days of booking – 50% of the amount for the course + avalanche kit rental
  • second installment – is paid 60 days before camp begins – 50% of the total amount

Schedule

Day 1. – Tuesday

Flight to Milan (on your own), transfer to Cervinia, overnight in a guesthouse. Evening meeting with your guide at a local restaurant. Discussion of the plan for the upcoming days.

The departure times depend on the weather conditions, we usually leave around 6:00 am and should finish the tour around 2:00 pm.

Day 2. – Wednesday: Breithorn 4164m

After breakfast, we will check the equipment. At 8:30 a.m. the cable car ascent, to warm up and stretch we’ll do a few ski runs. It is important to emphasize that Cervinia Ski Paradise is a really wonderful terrain – a mass of freeride lines from 3500m to 2000m overlooking the Matterhorn. After a warm-up, we strap on the skins and set off for the first 4000m summit: Breithorn (4164m). The approach will take about 2 hours, on easy terrain (if snow conditions are favorable, we will manage without using crampons and an ice-axe). From the summit we will see an endless sea of peaks, and the best is yet to come – a long descent to the village of Saint Jacques – more than 2000 meters of elevation loss! Then transfer by cab to the village of Champoluc and check in at the hotel. For the end of the day we’ll get dinner at a local restaurant (dinner is not included). Evening briefing outlining the plan for the next day.

Day 3. – Thursday: Felikhorn 4087m

After breakfast, we take a bus to Frachey and take the first cable car to the upper station of the Bettaforca lift. Ahead of us is the longest hike, which is the ascent of another 4000 meter peak – Felikhorn. We have 6km and 1300 meters of elevation gain ahead of us. Particularly interesting will be the via ferrata crossing, which by ridge will lead us to the Quintino Sella hut, closed in winter. From there we will move on to Felikhorn. After conquering our second 4000-meter peak, another descent of more than 2000 meters of elevation loss awaits us, this time to the village of Staffal. Transfer by ski bus to the town of Gressoney Le Trinite where we spend the night at the hotel. Dinner at a local restaurant (not included in the price), presentation of the plan for the next day.

Note: the presented tour is possible only with stable weather and avalanche conditions. If there are none, the guide will change the route.

Day 4. – Friday: Punta Giordani 4046m

After breakfast at the guesthouse, we take the ski lift (extra charge) to 3200 meters, from where we walk to Punta Giordani 4046m. After that we descend to Orestes Hutte 2600m – mountain hut with an amazing outdoor sauna and vegan food 🙂 Accommodation, evening dinner.

Day 5. – Saturday: Gniffeti Hutte 3600m

After breakfast we set off from Orestes Hutte to Gniffeti Hutte 3600m – about 1000 elevation gain and 5 km. There we will sleep in a mounatin hut, dinner is served in the evening, followed by a briefing.

Day 6. – Sunday: Ludwigshohe 4344m

After breakfast, we set off from the hut for the highest 4000-meter peak on our list. Our choices are:

  • Balmenhorn 4167m + Ludwigshöhe 4344m – a technically straightforward hike with 850m of elevation gain and 4km
  • Punta Gniffeti 4554m – also technically straightforward although much longer, as we will have an additional short climb during the descent

Regardless of the chosen destination, we assure you that the view will be worth the effort – from the eastern side there is a vertical mountain wall descending several hundred meters which opens up to us a view of the Italian Alps in its full splendor.
Finally, as always, the best part – a very long and a bit tiring descent. More than 15km and 3000 meters of elevation loss straight to the next and final town – Alagna. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 7. – Monday

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for Milan. Completion of the 5-day ski tour. Saying goodbye to the participants and end of the camp.

Transportation

Arrival to Malpensa Airport (Milan, Italy).

IMPORTANT: In the event of cancellation of the trip, the tour operator is not obliged to refund the cost of the air tickets. Please do not buy air tickets without contacting the tour operator in advance (for the final confirmation of the trip).

Insurance

Participants must have mountain sports insurance (that covers helicopter rescue). We strongly recommend that this also includes cancellation cover.

Obligatory equipment

  • alpine ski equipment (skis, skins, poles, ski boots), suggested width of the skis is more than 85 mm,
  • avalanche equipment (detector, probe, shovel),
  • crampons – we suggest lightweight crampons. Preferably hybrid (steel front teeth, the rest – aluminium),
  • ice axe – we suggest that this should not be a minimalist Camp Corsa type of axe, as its aluminium blade performs poorly in difficult conditions. Examples of good, lightweight ice axes are: Black Diamond Raven / Swift, Simond Naja Light Panne, Petzl Adze/Glacier,
  • ski crampons,
  • clothing: warm down jacket, hardshell, thin/thick gloves, underwear, buff, thermal sweatshirt or something suitable for a second layer, casual clothes for the evenings in the huts, hat – thin + thick,
  • sleeping bag liner ‘liner bag’ or super lightweight thin sleeping bag,
  • earplugs,
  • tissues for personal hygiene,
  • one litre thermos, water bottle,
  • goggles with replaceable lens for sun and fog,
  • sunglasses preferably with side caps (category 4),
  • lipstick + expedition cream (with at least 30 SPF),
  • mini toiletries bag (toothpaste, toothbrush, optional mini towel),
  • energy bars – 6-7 pieces,
  • isotonic drinks (tablets/powder) will be useful on warm days,
  • helmet – a lightweight climbing helmet, preferably lightweight but ski-certified helmet. Remember that you will be often also climbing in a helmet so we do not advise poorly ventilated ski helmets,
  • a backpack with a capacity of approx. 40 litres (must be able to accommodate equipment, food, water/thermos, extra clothing, avalanche equipment), the backpack with equipment should not be heavier than 10 kg, because we have to be light and fast :),
  • personal items, first aid kit, necessary medication, patches/plasters for possible abrasions, NRC foil, etc.
