Schedule
Day 1: Zermatt
Zermatt – a city inseparably associated with the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa. A beautiful, atmospheric city, where at every step you will find references to the surrounding mountains and nature. The history of conquering the surrounding peaks and crags is combined with modern mountaineering. A place where every mountain lover wants to be at least once. We’ll be lucky, because we’ll start and end our trek in Zermatt, a town located at an altitude of 1,608 m. You can get there by cog railroad or Glacier Express, and there are horse-drawn carriages (electrically powered) running around the town.
Plan: a day to arrive in Zermatt, check into your hostel, have an evening briefing with your UIMLA guide, have dinner together and discuss your plan for the next day and check your equipment. Possibility to do additional shopping (for trekking, equipment, etc.).
Accommodation: hostel in the center of Zermatt with breakfast.

Day 2: Zermatt – Europahutte
On this day, the trail takes us along a stunning traverse, high above the valley, with views of the snow walls of Monte Rosa, as well as other four-thousand-meter peaks: Dom 4545 meters above sea level, Taschhorn 4490 meters above sea level and Weisshorn 4505 meters above sea level. We will start trekking from Zermatt, at 1600 meters above sea level, towards Tufteren 2215 meters above sea level. During the trek we will use special tunnels that protect trekkers from falling rocks. We will spend the night at 2200 m above sea level in Europahutte.
Route: start in Zermatt; ascent to 2288m or optional trip by Sunnegga cable car. Lunch during the passage at the Ottavan hut. Reach Europahutte hut for dinner and overnight at 2200 m above sea level.
Technical information:
- about 1000 meters up, about 1000 meters down,
- distance: about 20 km, walking time: 7-8h,
- highest point: 2348 m above sea level.
Accommodation: Europahutte chalet, dormitory room with breakfast and dinner included.

Day 3: Europahutte – St Niklaus
A long, exceptionally mountainous day ending with an overnight stay in the village of St Niklaus 1091 meters above sea level. Along the way, a traverse of the higher parts of the Mattertall awaits, where there will be an opportunity to observe mountain goats or marmots. The slopes at this altitude are largely transformed by huge avalanches coming down here. Often, after winter, parts of the trail have to be fortified and repaired because they are damaged.
Route: start after breakfast at the Europahutte hut (2200 meters above sea level). Lunch en route. After descending to the village of Grachen, transfer by bus to the place of accommodation. Dinner and overnight at the hotel in St Niklaus.
Technical information:
- about 620 meters up, about 1750 meters down,
- distance about 20 km, walking time: 9-10h,
- highest point: Galenberg 2663 m above sea level.
Accommodation: hotel La Reserve in St Niklaus with breakfast included.

Day 4: St Niklaus – Gruben-Meiden
We begin the day by marching out to the upper station of the Jungu cable car at an altitude of 1988 meters above sea level* Along the way we will pass a series of white crosses, each dedicated to one of the families that have lived in the Mattertal Valley for generations. At the upper station of the cable car, we will stop at a restaurant for a second breakfast and coffee. There will also be time to see the picturesque church, which we were able to observe the previous day while hiking on the opposite side of the Mattertall Valley. After a short rest we will move on. First, through alpine meadows, past magnificent viewpoints of peaks such as Dom, Taschorn and Weisshorn. Then on to the Augustbordpass (2894 meters above sea level) in a rocky setting, which has been used since ancient times as a mountain pass to the Turtmanntal Valley. The descent from the pass is not the easiest – it is a steep and in places rocky path. The Turtmanntal Valley itself is beautiful and preserved relatively in its natural state. It is inhabited only in the summer, so that the landscape is not altered by ski stations and trails.
*In a situation requiring it, there is an option to go to the Jung by train (additional fee).
*In case of snow patches, it may be necessary to use hiking crampons.
Route: start after breakfast at hotel in St Niklaus, ascent by Jungu cable car (included). Lunch on the route, descent for the night to the village of Gruben – Meiden, where dinner and a well-deserved rest await us.
Technical information:
- about 1770 meters up, about 1100 meters down,
- distance about 15 km, walking time: 7-8h,
- highest point: Augustbordpass 2894 m above sea level.
Accommodation: hotel Schwarzhorn in Gruben-Meiden, with breakfast and dinner included.

Day 5: Gruben-Meiden – Zinal
One of the most scenically varied days during the entire Tour de Matterhorn. In addition to the accompanying four-thousand-foot Dent Blanche, Zinalrothorn, Obergabelhorn, Weisshorn and, if we’re lucky, the Matterhorn, we’ll see glacial lakes, and the route will traverse high above the valley. During the passage we will reach the beautiful Weisshorn Hotel, where we can stop for a rest. The trail we hike is also the route of the famous Sierre – Zinal race, a classic alpine run. A fairly steep forest path will bring us to the village of Zinal, where we will stop for the night.
Route: start from the hotel in Gruben-Meiden, lunch at Hotel Weisshorn (2323 m) or en route, dinner and overnight in Zinal.
Technical information:
- about 1200 meters up, about 1350 meters down,
- distance about 20 km, walking time: 8-9h,
- highest point: Meidpass 2790 m above sea level.
Accommodation: guesthouse Auberge Alpina in Zinal, with breakfast and dinner included.

Day 6: Zinal – Les Hauderes
We start the tour in Zinal at an altitude of 1660 m. The route initially leads along the ski lift. However, if there is a possibility, we will shorten the approach and go up to 2438 m above sea level to the Col de Serbois Pass. The contrast in views once you reach the pass is mind-blowing. We move from the plowed ski slopes to a sweeping view of the blue waters of the artificial lake Lac de Moiry and our goal for the day – Col de Torrent 2919 m. Our trail this day leads through alpine meadows and gentle grassy slopes, but it is not to be taken lightly – descents and ascents of about 800 vertical meters await us along the route. We descend into the Val d’Herens valley, along the way we will pass hamlets with picturesque buildings to reach Les Hauderes 1450 meters above sea level, where we will spend the night.
Route: start after breakfast at the hotel in Zinal. Lunch at a restaurant at Lac de Moiry 2127 m above sea level. Dinner and overnight in the village of Les Hauderes.
Technical information:
- about 2000 meters up, about 2200 meters down,
- distance about 22 km, walking time: 10h,
- highest point: Col de Torrent 2919 m above sea level.
Accommodation: hotel Des Hauderes in the village of Les Hauderes, with breakfast included.

Day 7: Arolla – Prarayer
We will start the day by taking a local bus to the village of Arolla 2006 meters above sea level, where we will begin our trek. The day will be full of glacial experiences. We will be waiting for a walk on the completely recently melted glacier Haut Glacier d’Arolla, which will lead us to the Col Collon pass 3087 meters above sea level* At this point we will cross the Swiss-Italian border. Two hundred meters below the pass is the Rifugio Collon – Nacamuli hut 2818 m.* The descent route below the hut is a very steep slope, insured with artificial facilitations such as iron buckles and chains. This way we will reach the Oren Valley, which will greet us with charming, grassy alpine meadows. These will lead us to the Lago di Place – Moulin lake. At the end of the lake is the Rifugio Prarayer hut 2005 meters above sea level, where we will spend the night.
*If snow patches are present, it may be necessary to use hiking crampons.
Route: start after breakfast in Les Hauderes 1450 m above sea level, travel by bus to Arolla 2006 m above sea level. Lunch along the way, in a hostel or in the field. Dinner and overnight at the Rifugio Prarayer refuge 2005 m above sea level.
Technical information:
- about 1100 meters up, about 1100 meters down,
- distance about 15 km, walking time: 9h,
- highest point: Col Collon Pass 3087 m above sea level.
Accommodation: hostel Rifugio Prarayer with breakfast and dinner included.

Day 8: Prarayer – Breuil Cervinia
A very difficult and challenging day. True, we will not be crossing a glacier, but both the ascent and descent from the highest point of the route – Colle de Valcournera Pass 3066 meters above sea level is rocky and steep, with unstable rocks and rock debris often piled up. We may also encounter lingering, frozen patches of snow*. Just beyond the pass, at 2910 meters above sea level, is the high mountain refuge of Rifugio Peruccah Vuillermoz, which is famous for the alpine goats that reside in its area. Meanwhile, the trail will take us to Lago di Cignana 2298 meters above sea level, from where we have another short ascent to the Finiestra di Cignana Pass 2441 meters above sea level. During the descent from the pass, nothing but await the appearance of the Matterhorn, which dominates the Breuil Cervinia resort and the nearby Monte Rosa massif. After reaching the village of Perreres, a local bus will take you to your accommodation in Breuil Cervinia.
*If snow patches are present, hiking crampons may be necessary.
Route: start after breakfast at Rifugio Prarayer 2005 m. Lunch on the way at a hostel, bus ride, dinner and overnight in Breuil Cervinia.
Technical information:
- about 1200 meters up, about 1100 meters down,
- distance about 14 km, walking time: 9h,
- highest point: Colle de Valcournera 3066 m above sea level.
Accommodation: exclusive chalet in the village of Breuil Cervinia, with breakfast included.

Day 9: Breuil Cervinia – Zermatt
Reaching the highest point of our trek, the 3301m Theodulpass, depending on snow conditions or the condition of the participants, can be done in two ways.* We also return to Switzerland that day.
Theodulpass 3301 meters above sea level was used as early as Roman times as a mountain crossing. A long, divided approach awaits us. We will gain altitude laboriously, as we will face almost 1,300 meters of ascent. However, the higher we get, the more extensive the views – on one side of the Theodulpass the Matterhorn appears in all its glory, on the other side we will see the Klein Matterhorn and the Monte Rosa massif. When we reach Theodulhutte 3317 meters above sea level, we will have a well-deserved lunch, rest and move on. From the pass we descend over the lingering snow first to the Gandegghutte hut 3029 m above sea level, from where we have a spectacular view of such four-thousand-metre peaks as Breithorn, Pollux, Castor, Liskamm that is the Monte Rosa massif and the Matterhorn on the other side of the valley.
Route: start after breakfast in Breuil Cervinia 2006 m. Lunch en route. Dinner and overnight in Zermatt.
Technical information:
- about 1300 meters up, about 1700 meters down,
- distance about 19 km, walking time: 9-10h,
- highest point: Theodulpass 3301 m above sea level.
Accommodation: hostel in the center of Zermatt with breakfast included.
